New Guerrilla Studio Announcement Hinting at Horizon Franchise Expansion?

Today, management at Guerrilla announced that their Studio Director of 20 years, Angie Smets, is moving onto a Head of Development Strategy role at PlayStation Studios. This statement, which was released alongside their announcement for management restructuring, could have some big implications:

“We have full confidence in our new leadership as they steer Guerrilla towards a bright future, expanding the world of Horizon with Aloy’s next adventure and our exciting online project.”

Although this part in their announcement was relatively sparse in details (by design), one can assume that this hints at either a general expansion of the Horizon universe, or perhaps an early confirmation for Horizon 3.

In terms of general universe expansion, Guerrilla Studios has announced a variety of products from the IP, including an online multiplayer game set in the Horizon universe and collaborations with Lego. However, even though the announcement could be a reference to side projects, it feels safe to assume that the successful franchise is pursuing a third installment in the future.

The first installment in the series, Horizon Zero Dawn, was one of PlayStation’s best selling games, with 20 million copies sold in its release month alone while winning numerous awards. The second installment in the series, Horizon Forbidden West, also was a commercial success per many metrics, and was nominated for plenty of awards. More recently, Horizon Call of the Mountain released for PlayStation’s VR2 virtual reality platform. With the series’ existing success and its development history, a continuation into Horizon 3 seems likely.

With the latest DLC, Burning Shores, having been released as a PS5 exclusive, fans will have to wait to see whether the series will continue this trend.
